Medication Overuse Headache and Rebound Headache

While this is less known to doctors and to the general public, headaches may occur as a result of people taking too much medicine! Not only does this happen to people suffering from migraine and other headaches, it is extremely common and is the 3rd most common headache after tension and migraine headache.

Rebound headaches can occur from a variety of medications, both prescription, and ones people can buy themselves at any pharmacy or even convenience store.  As a matter of fact, while many people believe that only prescriptions medications are dangerous for the body, medications that anyone can buy are some of the leading causes of kidney failure, liver failure, and can contribute to heart disease and ulcers.  And this does not include the eventual rebound headaches that may occur.

Combination Therapies

Opiates

Codeine, Hydrocodone, Vicodin, Oxycodone, Percocet, Morphine, Fentanyl

Triptans

Sumatriptan, Relert, Rizal

This condition may be harder to treat and sometimes patients will need a comprehensive treatment program which includes both treating their underlying headaches along with stopping the offending agents.
